[25 Nov 2023: I have news from this bass! Check out the final picture please. Andreas has taken off the red Fender sticker, which is perfectly fine, and installed a set of Dimarzios with cream covers he already had at home. It's like if he had read my mind, it matches perfectly! Great job my friend!]
Since quite a while I was thinking on doing a bass, especially since ADP Guitar Parts sold me 2 bass bodies from a brand called "Boston". I took the P bass body and refined the belly cut and arm cuts - don't expect exact Fender specs though - and since I don't trust 100% Chinese necks and on the other end Allparts are too expensive, I preferred to buy a used Harley Benton bass neck (which is obviously Chinese but the quality control is done by Europeans).
The neck was basically as new, frets all that, and since the headstock wasn't wide enough for a traditional Precision shape, why not the P50's headstock shape? I don't have dozens with experiences with Harley Benton, but the first years I started doing this, I've used 3 Strat DIY kits from them, and this year I've relic'd a Jazzmaster kit too. Essentially, the bodies are crappy and that mahogany-kind-of wood is way too light, but the necks are pretty good! The Jazzmaster was awesome to play, I took it once to church to play live and the next week it was sold, otherwise I would have took it again for a spin. Once the frets leveled the action was incredibly low, and although the neck is quite bulky I really enjoyed it, and the guy who bought it enjoyed it too. So, why not? At least I know where it comes from. And YES, the truss rod works, first thing I tried once it arrived.
After receiving a question from someone interested in this bass, I have realised that there was some information missing in my description of the neck:
Width at the nut: 42,3mm
Width at the 12th fret: 58,1mm
Width at the 63,8mm
Thickness just after the 1st fret: 24,1mm
Thickness just after the 12th fret: 24,7mm
The hardware is new and all from Harley Benton/Thomann too, the pickguard is from ADP Guitar Parts; however the 250k pots are from Göldo.
Moving on to the aesthetical side, almost everyone who buys my projects wants a Fender look alike. So I told myself that a relic'd, worn, trashed Precision Bass decal would be ironic. Plus, the Fender sticker on the pickguard would give it a Punk touch. 2 pin-up stickers for the vintage look, and I personally would choose cream pickup covers for it if I were you.
It looks very good folks, the nitro checking turned out pretty great! So there you have it, an honest bass set, that's how I would call it.
