Hey guys!
This was a particularly special project; Ruben asked me for one of my relic finishes on Strat parts. A roasted ash classic SSS body arrived at my humble workshop, and also a flamed maple/rosewood neck.
My first idea was to make a Sunburst with a solid base, then we agreed on half transparency, but when I went for it, it was really bizarre. Having such a great-looking 2-pc with those ash veins that I love so much, I removed the coats I had already made, searched for an example from my favorite Masterbuilder Vincent van Trigt for inspiration (first 2 pictures side-by-side), and started all over again.
What can I say? It is indeed a more discreet finish because there's less contrast than if it wasn't roasted ash, but when you look at it closer, the details are beautiful, well, in my opinion, of course. I haven't tinted the showing wood in any way, just a good coat of the wood wax I've been using since last year — not bee wax, that's another thing yet! The center of the Sunburst is more yellow, but my IKEA lamp and my smartphone were playing against me today.
As for the neck, it needed a bit of sanding still before the finish, and it had a couple of amber tinted Nitorlack's Golden Age before several other thin coats from the same lacquer but transparent. As a matter of fact, everything is Golden Age lacquer, tinted or not, except for the Gloss Black on the edges of the body. I love this product!
I relic'd the neck, tinted the showing wood, and protected it again with wax all over it. It fills minor imperfections and helps the nitro finish to hold better when the finish is relic, preventing it from flaking easily.
That's it for now, hope you guys like it, and keep following for new stuff!
Peace!
